Our former set up:

GoDaddy’s Basic, Grid Server, Hosting Plan

The issues:

1. Slow loading on websites built with the WordPress platform.
2. GoDaddy seems to open and close their FTP connection after each file uploaded. That means when you upload a folder that contains lots of files AND other folders, the chance of losing your FTP connection increases. I got dropped all the time. Found a workaround by zipping the file and doing one upload, then having to extract it once it was done. I didn’t like changing my workflow for them.

Why GoDaddy is still good:

Their Customer Service is great. We’ve called several times for all sorts of reasons and they always have an impressive quality of service.

Where we’re at now:

Host Gator

1. First, we feel it’s important to try new services, so we remain informed on the best website and hosting combination available.
2. Secondly, Host Gator is Wind Powered. Sustainability is awesome.
3. Finally, the decision is still out as to Host Gator’s WordPress-friendliness. Although they DO NOT appear in WordPress’ recommended list,  we read the reviews and liked what we heard.

More thoughts:

Yes, we looked at BlueHost, which is at the top of WordPress’ list of hosts, but the reviews were concerning. There is a website dedicated to the complaints. Any Blue Host’ers want to chime in? How is it working with your WordPress site?

Yes, we still work with customers who use GoDaddy as their host. In some situations, GoDaddy is working great. Although, if you feel like you’re having slow loading times on your site and you’re using both GoDaddy and WordPress, you might think about switching.
